Michigan energy options

Michigan offers both electric and gas customer-choice programs, but their participation rules are different.

Electricity

Choice subject to a 10% cap

Michigan's electric choice program generally limits alternative supply to 10% of an electric utility's weather-adjusted retail sales. Whether an individual customer can enroll depends on program capacity and the applicable utility's process. [1]

Before you decide: Check capacity or waiting-list status before agreeing to a supplier contract. A licensed supplier listing alone does not reserve space for your account.

Natural gas

Gas Customer Choice

Michigan's Gas Customer Choice program allows participating customers to consider licensed alternative gas suppliers. Confirm that your utility and service address participate, then compare the supplier's commodity offer with utility supply. [2]

Before you decide: Review the term, fees and return-to-utility provisions. Electric-program capacity rules should not be applied automatically to a gas account.

Check the total price and contract terms before accepting an offer. For service or billing questions, find the right contact.
